Functional Skills
Functional Skills English qualifications are designed to give learners the skills to operate confidently, effectively and independently in education, work and everyday life. They have been created in response to employers’ perceptions that many learners are not achieving a sufficiently firm grounding in the basics.
Study Mode: Full time/Part time
Entry Requirements:
Students on the programme will be at least 19 years of age.
There are no formal requirements entry requirements however, you will be assessed to ensure this course is suited to your needs.
What will you learn?
The aims of these qualifications are to develop learner understanding and skills in:
Entry 1
Speaking, Listening and Communication – participate in and understand the main points of simple discussions/exchanges about familiar topics with another person in a familiar situation.
Reading – Read and understand short, simple texts that explain or recount information.
Writing – Write short, simple sentences.
Spelling Tests – Multiple choice test.
Entry 2
Speaking, Listening and Communication – participate in discussions/exchanges about familiar topics making active contributions, with one or more people in familiar situations.
Reading – Read and understand short, simple texts that explain or recount information.
Writing – Write short texts with some awareness of the intended audience.
Spelling Tests – Multiple choice test.
Entry 3
Speaking, Listening and Communication – respond appropriately to others and make some extended contributions in familiar formal and informal discussions and exchanges.
Reading – Read and understand the purpose and content of straightforward texts that explain, inform and recount information.
Writing – Write texts with some adaptation to the intended audience.

Rail
Overview:
The NVQs in Rail Engineering will enable you to demonstrate your professional skills and knowledge in a wide range of specialist areas. These qualifications prove competence of industrial performance, knowledge and understanding and recognise the ability of individuals working in traction and rolling stock within the rail sector.
Entry requirements:
There is no specific requirement for this course. We have to ensure that learners have the potential and opportunity to gain the qualification successfully
Who is it for?
This course is designed for anyone who would like to develop their skills already working within the Rail Industry or someone who is ready to start a new career in Railway Engineering. Anyone who wants to prove competence of the level of skills required of basic track operatives. This introductory qualification will enable them to access the trackside and work safely and effectively in routine work under close supervision. Usually basic track operatives will work with contractors or hired through agencies for specific duties. Due to the safety critical nature of the rail industry, it is indispensable that they are able to prove their competence at this level, not only the knowledge but the practical skills required for the role as well.
How is it assessed?
The optimum method of collecting evidence of a candidate’s competence is by direct observation of activity when training on the track. Each learner is required to create a portfolio of evidence which demonstrates achievement of all the learning outcomes and, assignments and/or written examination.
Progression
Learners who are successful will be able to progress into further learning and employment within the Rail industry.

NVQ Certificate in Rail Engineering Track Maintenance
NVQ Level 3 is ideal if you are working in rail engineering and have a great deal of technical skills and knowledge. You work with minimum supervision and have a good record of safety, fault correction and ensuring that work meets the required standard.
